José Manuel Fernández-Real

Endocrinologist MD, PhD

Is an endocrinologist and a research scientist at the Girona Biomedical Research Institute Dr. Josep Trueta. He has more than 25 years of experience in the study of obesity, insulin resistance and associated metabolic disorders. He is currently the Director of Medical Sciences (University of Girona), Director of Research in the Department of Endocrinology, and Scientific Director of the “Fat Bank”, a nation-wide Biobank specialized in adipose tissue samples. He is also the Principal Investigator and member of the Steering Committee of the CIBERobn, a Network of Excellence in the Research of Obesity in Spain.
He has published more than 479 articles indexed in PubMed, with an H index of 86 and >31,006 citations (Google Scholar). He is the Principal Investigator of more than 20 National and International Projects and former member of the Editorial Board of Diabetes Care and Clinical Chemistry, among others.
At present he is the coordinator of the European ThinkGut project (Horizon 2020, POCTEFA). Since 2019, he has been involved in 3 other European projects: one from the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), one from HDHL-JPI, and another from the Innovative Training Network of excellence. He has also intervened as head of Workpackages in the European project of the VIIth FLORINASH framework program (finished in 2015) and in the Horizon 2020 PEPPER project (finished in 2020).
